Lexington Herald-Leader: Hornish seeks more Sparta magic.
"Like Texas, Kentucky Speedway is a magical place for me," Hornish said. "This is the track where it all began, and it's still a place where we find success." More on this story later, too.
Lexington Herald-Leader: Ganassi teammates divided by will to win. Scott says he needs Dan's help to get him into the winner's circle (check out the Aug. 8 newsstand, where Dan discusses his rotten season).
Lexington Herald-Leader: Sophomore slump slows Andretti. Says Marco, "I've been competitive week in and week out and it's just been something stupid that takes me out each time."
Cincinnati Enquirer: Hornish honing in on Kentucky. Also has an attached Q&A with Sam, where he says he'd like to go to art school. Most of the story focuses on possible NASCAR-jumping, so it's also linked in the Silly Season section.
Cincinnati Post: Rice is glad he chose racing. Nice profile of the 2004 Indy 500 winner from a soon-to-be-defunct (but good) paper. Rice discounts any notion that he was a pro baseball prospect. He also discusses the season, changing to D&R, and the old question of whether or not racecar drivers are athletes, including Scott Goodyear's favorite line about traveling a football field a second. Says Buddy, "If you start to have any form of breakdown, mentally or physically, it's just going to compound problems."
Putting the crash behind him and looking ahead. Oh, not Dario (really??) but Vitor Meira, who is pretty candid in this Autosport.com story. Vitor quote from the story: "It's good to run close and two-three wide, but everyone has to understand that bad things can happen. We have to push, and race hard; but we also have to know when to do that and at Michigan we were a little over the edge."
Much like yesterday's USA Today story (Aug. 8 newsstand), IndyCar.com tells us about the diversity of tracks in the final four races.
IndyCar.com: Sharp heads to Kentucky after hard-fought third-place finish. Also notes RHR heading to his second oval, and that Helio & Sarah need extra clearance from Dr. Olinger before climbing into the car at Kentucky.
AP: Penske's Hornish & Castroneves fail to meet expectations. Someone might want to tell the good folks at TSN that neither driver races in NASCAR yet. A good read, if for nothing else than the Helio quotes about Tony Stewart copying his celebration.

A.J. FOYT
In USA Today, A.J. discusses his losing battle with a bulldozer, his winning battle with a water moccasin, and then tells how Darren Manning (as well as the rest of the guys in "The Big One", including grandson AJ IV) escaped some serious injury. A.J. says "the angels were working overtime." A.J. also tells us he's parking the dozer. Good move.

THE BIG ONE, PART V
ESPN: Jemele Hill tells Danica to shut up in her feud with Dan Wheldon. I believe Danica's version of the events (in that Dan was probably more at fault than Dario), but she did come off as more than a little bit whiny.
Dario was on Larry King Live Wednesday night. Scroll about 1/4 of the way down the page for a transcript. A couple of highlights: "This accident, I think, was caused by, in my opinion, the car next to me moving up the track into the back of my car," (he called it a slight misjudgement). Dario also complained about the aero/rules package. "The regulations that we run on the Indy cars and those types of tracks mean that we run very, very closely together with zero margin for error." Dario has been one of a handful of drivers that has expressed his frustration with high-speed ovals.
It's always fun to get the gossip people involved in this, as Contact Music tells us that Dario isn't blaming his rival for "the big one" (and gives us some Dario & Ashley red carpet photos).
The Scottish press, including the Glasgow Daily Record, has a rather colorful accounting of the crash, including quotes from Dario's uncle.

SILLY-SEASON NEWS
The Lexington Herald-Leader story on Hornish referenced above has the obligatory will-Sam-go-t0-NASCAR bit. It says the 17-race schedule makes Hornish & other drivers "seriously stir-crazy" (the author's words, not his) and mentions the well-known RP desire to add another Cup team.
The Cincinnati Enquirer tells us Hornish is "about 50-50." Dan Wheldon says he'd consider it, especially if Sam left, but he "really enjoys driving these cars."
Apparently, according to the AP, Sam isn't telling anybody, including his teammate. (For the record, Helio is happy where he is).

USA Today: Road to IRL Title is winding
One would think this story would be about TK (-81) jumping into the Dario-Scott points race, but it's not .
It's about the ICS's changing nature from the all-oval series Scott Dixon won in 2003 to the fact that two of the final four races in the championship stretch feature left and right turns.
A couple of quotes:
"It's certainly added a new dimension to the formula," says team owner Chip Ganassi. "Winning a championship now takes a well-rounded driver as opposed to an oval-track or road-track specialist."
Dario said the CART refugees had an advantage at first, but the IRL holdovers have "caught on pretty quickly." Then, he called for even more roadies.

Kentucky is this weekend, but TK discusses the difficulty of racing at Infineon in the Vallejo Times Herald, looking ahead to the Aug. 26 race.
In this excerpt, he discusses what the difference is between Infineon and the last track the ICS ran on. "Kanaan said drivers may shift 40 times, each lap, in Sonoma, long known as a difficult trip for racers with its elevation changes and blind corners. Michigan isn't without its merits, though, as Kanaan compared the wide-open, wheel-to-wheel racing to driving on a foggy road, where the mind is tested more than the body."

Meanwhile, while TK was in Northern California, he showed off his cooking skill. Drivers love roadies. They're (ostensibly) safer and certainly challenging. But much like hockey and soccer, the intricacies of the event don't translate well to TV, or the crowd. We like passing, and at the last two road-course races, the only real passing took place in the pits. At Michigan, there were some pretty incredible moves being made almost every lap. Officials might be wise to listen to these folks from the Detroit Free Press. They said they'll go to Belle Isle, but big superspeedways are made for racing. Uhh, yeah. Oval-track racing plays in America, especially on television. Speaking of losing Michigan, check out the math done by the Jackson Citizen-Patriot. The last five races at MIS have been decided by a TOTAL of 1.811 seconds. And the IRL and ISC can't figure out a way to find a mutually-agreeable date? (and ISC isn't going to promote THAT? ... then again, it might show some people that something is more entertaining than NASCAR). -- Former Indy 500 starter J.J. Yeley is likely out of his Cup ride (although he's been linked with the Wood Brothers car).
ABC/ESPN's Jack Arute and Scott Goodyear offer their views on crashes & repairing them in the wake of "the big one" at MIS on IndyCar.com. Goodyear wonders why big wrecks happen when cars are going straight.

Milka Duno: According to the Indianapolis Star (Aug. 6), Milka is on probation and will not race Saturday at Kentucky (neither will the SAMAX team, which has enlisted Tomas Enge to help Milka set up the car).

With Mutoh's entry, and if Roth brings 2 cars (one for himself and one for an IPS driver), Herb brings one and if SAMAX brings back Duno (or Enge), the car count could hit 23 for the Chicagoland race. Curt Cavin, in his Aug. 8 Indy Star blog, said he expects 22 cars for Chicagoland.

From Curt Cavin's blog (8/8/2007), Adrian Fernandez's team still has its IndyCar equipment and Tom Anderson is apparently interested in a return to the IRL, but things "haven't been worked out."

August 7 newsstand
Tuesdays tend to be slow news days in-between races, but the hot topics *continue* to be "how the heck did Dario walk away from that?" and the whole IRL-MIS divorce -- which might be the most contentious SillySeason topic in IndyCar Series history since Sam Hornish Jr. announced he was signing with Penske and shaved his goatee.
On MIS
Toledo Blade: IndyCar's future at MIS uncertain, but sides still talking
Highlights ...
MIS president Roger Curtis acknowledged that a considerable amount of fence-mendingoccurred over the weekend, when phone conversations and e-mails were replaced with face-to-face discussions. Curtis also spoke at the drivers’ meeting before Sunday’s race and said the response to his optimistic message was encouraging. ... Curtis said MIS will do everything it can to get open-wheel racing back, but it will have to demand a July race date so as to give the track time to adequately prepare for its traditional Nextel Cup events each June and August. “We’re parting company, taking a hiatus, and we hope it’s a short one, but we have to be realistic about the politics involved, and that a lot of dynamics play into the schedule each year,” Curtis said.
In other words: Don't hold your breath. The IRL needs to do some serious gymnastics, as every July date is currently taken (Watkins Glen, Nashville, Mid-Ohio, and then that NASCAR race at Indy). Nashville & MO have been rather successful at the gate. Of course, if ESPN and NASCAR hadn't requested IMS move the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard up one week, this would be a moot issue, as that last July weekend would be open for the ICS race at MIS.

The more, the merrier, when it comes to IndyCar news & info online. Jeff Ianucci at MyNameIsIRL, Pressdog and, of course, TrackSide Online all do a fantastic job of letting us know what's going on in IndyCar.
This blog is the start of what I hope will become a full-blown website that largely covers the SillySeason (as well as the racing) side of the Indy Racing League & the IndyCar Series.
Eventually, the goal is to break this out into a full-blown website with driver/team/track/league histories, et al. But for now, regular postings will mainly include:
1. Updated news from around the world (the daily newsstand)
2. Comment on what's going on in the IRL, IndyCar Series and open-wheel racing in general
3. Regular SillySeason updates (using verifiable, published sources for info, NOT conjecture).
This blog is the start of what I hope will become a full-blown website that largely covers the SillySeason (as well as the racing) side of the Indy Racing League & the IndyCar Series.
